With all broadcasting switched over to digital, you might be wondering if it's time to replace your old TV. While I'm not one to tell you how to spend your money, I'll state that now is a great time to purchase since the technologies are quite mature, and you can obtain a very good TV for the money. If you haven't been watching an HDTV so far, you might not realize what you are missing. However, when you are one in your house, you'll be shocked in the color and also the clarity.

So, what should you be looking for when looking for a new TV? Well, the very first thing you need to get straightened out is your budget. Figure out how much you need to spend before you go to the store so you don't find yourself making an impulse purchase that you will can not afford. With this budget in mind, you can start seeing what TVs you can afford. You will quickly notice that a certain price will often correspond to a particular size of TV. If this size seems big enough for your room, you can continue shopping. However, if you can only afford very small TVs, it may be best to keep saving.

Once you have the size issue taken care of, it's time to look at features. One big issue you might encounter quickly on the larger end of the price spectrum is whether you should get an LCD or perhaps a plasma television. This issue could (and does) fill it's own article, but let me just breakdown the fundamental pros and cons of every here:

LCD Pros:

High resolution at smaller portions
Energy-efficient
Lightweight

LCD Cons:

Smaller for same cost as plasma
Response time can be an problem with some models

Plasma Pros:

Good response time
Larger size for money

Plasma Cons:

Fragile
Use lot of power
Burn in can be an issue

Make sure to research this issue more thoroughly and choose which technologies are for you personally.

After you have everything sorted out, it's down to smaller features. Rather than try to cover many of these, I will go ahead and tell you to just visit the store and check out the TVs. Make sure they're running an HD signal. Compare the models within your budget, and see which one you like the feel of best. Consider other conditions like sound and interface, but focus primarily image quality.

After you have made the decision, get you TV home, hook it up to the HD source of your decision, and enjoy!
